It’s just a few days into 2014, and here I am trying to write some more again this year. I think I tried starting to do this last year as well but it didn’t last long, that’s kind of how these things go. The only time I really updated a lot was when I was posting about the development of Speeder so maybe I need to start developing another game.
I only made one Android game last year, it was mostly a vanity type project called Chipper. It’s a card game that is played back where I grew up, similar to Dirty Clubs or Euchre. I released it during the summer and didn’t expect many downloads. Looking at the developer console I’m just under 200 downloads on it, which is several times more then I ever expected. I’m calling Chipper a success, my friends who play the actual game back home all love it and the download numbers are good.
I did write one other game this year, Path Breaker for Ludum Dare 26. Ludum Dare is a 48 hour game jam where there is a theme for the game you develop over that weekend. The theme of that competition was “Minimalism” and I used very minimal graphics and gameplay to make something that came out pretty fun. The game would probably work as an Android game so I’m hoping to port it over at some point and add onto it. That might be something I do for 2014.
Most of my development work this last year was for work, which is kind of disappointing to me. Not to say work isn’t interesting, because the work I do is pretty interesting, but I really wish I had done more for myself. Above anything else I want to do more software development in my own time this year, maybe release several games this year and attempt to actually make money off of them again. We’ll see, it’s the start of the new year so I should try harder for something more.
2013 is here and I’d like to write more one here during it. I post a lot of my pictures but there usually isn’t a lot to write about those unless I want to get into technical details and that’s not much fun. I’ll probably post about all sorts of random things, since I have interests all over the board, or I’ll post about silly things a lot because that is what I spend most of my time doing.
I’m hoping to post more about game making this year, I wasn’t very good about that this last year at all. I feel like I mostly drifted last year and didn’t accomplish all that much. This next year I want to create more, My primary outlet for that is usually programming and game making and I’m start work on a new Android game. I’ve also signed up to take part in One Game a Month, a initiative by some of the guys involved in Ludum Dare to get people making more games. It’s not like I don’t have the time for it, I spend so much time just screwing around when I could be doing something useful. I’m not sure if I’m going to be using that new Android game for this right away since I feel like it needs more then a month of work, but we’ll see. Since January has started here I really need to start on a game for this month then.
I have so many game to play right now too. I just bought Far Cry 3 which looks like it is rad to play even if the story is bad in the end, I have the Mass Effect Trilogy pack on PS3, I started with Kerbal Space Program again, I got the Civilization 5 expansion in the Steam winter sale, and there are always old games I just get interested in playing again. It is sometimes hard to figure out what to play, they all call to me.
I need to find more time to practice photography. I bought a new lens recently that should be even better for sports shots, I hope to test it out at roller derby soon. I took some nice pictures back at my dad’s over Christmas with the lens, the snow made it difficult to get the color right but once I figured out how to compensate everything worked well. Here is my favorite picture I took of a bird just outside the back door:
I really do want to do more creative stuff this year though, funny Youtube videos, podcasts, stuff like that. I need to keep myself motivated better and find others to do these things with.
Going through an old coat I found a Mondovi Supervalu receipt from 2005, the contents of which are:
- 5 Roma Pizzas (2 Bacon Cheeseburger, 1 Deluxe, 1 Sausage Mushroom, 1 Canadian Bacon)
- 1 4-pack of Sprecher Root Beer
- 1 Miracle Whip
- 1 package of Kraft American Cheese Singles
- 2 boxes of Swiss Cake Rolls
- 1 Ruffles Original
- 1 loaf of white bread
- 2 24 oz bottle 6-packs of Pepsi
Shockingly similar to the types of things I get these days
I finished Speeder, put it out on the Android Market and of course get no sales. The free version is doing okay and it’s generating more ad revenue then any of my other apps but that’s still nothing. It’s unfortunate but if nothing changes I’ll probably be looking for another job in July. I haven’t given up though as the idea of getting a regular job sounds dreadful. I had an idea for another new game that I’ve started work on already.
The new game is going to be a math game, and force you to try and do simple math problems quickly in order to do well. I like this because it’s something you can get better at over time, the more you play the easier it will be to work quickly. I’ll post more about it as I get more finished on it but it’s coming along really nicely I think.
I’m using libgdx to make it, previously I’ve worked just in the Android Canvas to write things, but I wanted to try out something using OpenGL and nice game framework. Libgdx seems to have the best documentation and demos and tutorials and such of the game frameworks I looked at. I’ve been able to figure out how to do anything I need to do in it by looking over their website and forums so I’ve been happy.
I’ve also been goofing around with Haskell in order to learn it. Haskell is a completely functional programming language as opposed to Java which is an imperative programming language. It’s a different way of thinking when you write programs in a functional language and a lot of people think it will be the way to go in the future. I’m starting to feel good about what I’ve learned in it so I’ll probably fiddle around with writing some stuff from Project Euler, algorithm stuff like that seems perfect for what Haskell does.
Not much else to talk about, it’s getting nice out so I’ll probably start going to the beach soon, I’ll post some pictures from there because that place is rad.
Hola amigos! I know it’s been a long time since I’ve rapped at ya but I’ve been kicking tires and lighting fires. Okay maybe none of that, for some reason I just felt like opening my post Jim Anchower style.
So I haven’t worked since the end of April and it’s been fantastic. I’ve had the first real summer I could enjoy worry-free in about 15 years. I’ve spent far too many days at the beach getting more sun then I have in the past 10 years combined. It hasn’t been all goofing off though, I’ve been working on writing Android programs as well. Under the company name kyrutech I’ve released one game, Tile Slider, and have another on the way, Orbital Defense. Tile Slider was released for free but I’m hoping to be able to put a small charge on the full version of Orbital Defense, with a lite free version also available to get people interested. We’ll see how that pans out.
I’m not expecting to make much money off of this so I am looking for other work. Leaving Minnesota is at the top of my priority list when it comes to looking for jobs, I’m mainly focusing on the Boston area and Milwaukee. I’ve just recently started looking even halfway seriously so we’ll see how it goes. I still get calls almost every day of people trying to get me into jobs up here in Minnesota even though I don’t list that as a place I want to work on any of my online resumes.
I don’t know if there is much more to say, I just kind of felt like posting something up on here. I always think I’d like to update this more often with interesting content but I just never really do. Oh well, all is good, I am happy with things right now.
So there is an android apparently for WordPress which means I can post from anywhere. I don’t post that much anyways but who knows what I will do with this. Probably nothing but the idea is fun.
Well I figured I’d put down the various things I’m up to, what games I’m playing, what I’m reading, what I’m watching. Why not I figure.
What I’m Playing
X3: Terran Conflict (PC) Awesome big space game where you fly around, fighting bad guys, making money and just generally doing what you want. There are some specific storylines in the game from various factions that can lead to giving you some great rewards, but largely you make your own goals. They recently released a big update for the game that added more content and have another one coming soon so it still gets great support. There is also a pretty active mod community for it that can help fill in any of the gaps the vanilla came has.
Street Fighter IV (PS3) This is another one that came out a while ago but I recently got back into playing it. I almost competed in a tournament in Roseville the other day so I start practicing again and am enjoying it. I usually main with Rose but also will give Sakura a try now and again. This is very fun fighting game though it can be very frustrating as well, online play is basically all Ryu and Ken who everyone knows how to play decent. Overall I dig it and even with losing a lot I still have fun.
Disgaea 2 (PSP) So I picked this up for my PSP recently and have been enjoying it. This originally came out for the PS2 in the past but they updated it a bit and sent it out on the PSP. It’s a Disgaea game so it’s basically about grinding up characters and weapons to make yourself more powerful and beat everything in the game up. Having it on the PSP in nice because I can play for a little bit and come back later, I don’t have to sit with it for a while to get any fun out of it. It’s not the type of game for most people, but I like it.
Brutal Legend (PS3) This is the big one I’m currently playing. It just came out this week so I’ve only put a couple of nights into it but it is pretty epic so far. Basically you are Eddie, this super band roadie who gets killed and gets transported to a world designed completely around heavy metal. He has a giant ax that he can use to attack and a rad guitar that shoots lighting and fire when Eddie thrashes. Jack Black voices Eddie and does a great job. There are plenty of other famous rockers in the game as well, such as Ozzy Osbourne as the Guardian of Metal and Lemmy as a bass-playing healer named Killmaster. The humor of the game is pretty good as it is pretty aware how ridiculous it is, but so far it hasn’t gone too much into “wink wink nudge nudge” territory. The soundtrack is great too with both the original score working well and the licensed heavy metal tracks fighting in nicely. I am very happy with the game so far.
I think that’s all I’m going to put down so far, I’ll go into what I’m watching and what I’m reading at a later time. Blog posting takes a long time.
Not a lot going on lately, at least not enough that I want to talk about much. I figured I should update at some point though.
Up in Blaine last night for a bonfire, that went pretty well. It was a little windy though and the fire decided to send all it’s ash at me for half the night. We grilled out though and roasted marshmallows and such, good times.
Today was Microcon at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds. Picked up Sinestro Corps War hardcovers, Marvel Zombies 3 and two action figures, a Booster Gold and a Blue Beetle, the Blue & Gold. I also picked up some movies at Best Buy afterwards and picked up some basketball stuff at Dicks’ Sporting Goods. So I spent a nice chunk of change today, though given that I never spend my money I think it is alright.
Now just so that I have them saved somewhere to show other people, here are some links to stuff:
That’s all I have for now.
